Weird Traditions – Show Me Your French Fry

Yeah I know, that’s a pretty weird title for a Disney related blog post, but this is something that has become a strange family tradition every time we visit the parks.

We have the “normal” traditions like every other family that visits Walt Disney World. Eat a Dole Whip, ride Big Thunder at night, catch Illuminations from a particular spot (top secret) … and take a picture of a french fry before devouring it. That last one is weird, but my kids wouldn’t have it any other way.

Years ago my family was sitting outside of Cosmic Rays Starlight Cafe and as I was about to snap a shot of them enjoying their food, my daughter spontaneously decided to show me a french fry she was about to eat. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but when we returned home and created our photo album of the trip, she fell in love with that picture. It was just a silly shot.

We remembered that quirky moment on our next trip and she wanted to re-enact it. My wife rolled her eyes when I told her, “Wait, before we leave we have to get our french fry shot!”

Now every time we visit the World the other kids (and even my wife) have decided to get in on the act. We usually try to hit Cosmic Ray’s again, but any french fry will do. Maybe we’ll try to get a shot of a french fry at every quick service down there (mental note: save that idea for later).

The point is: let yourself be open to finding those weird, silly, unique moments that can make your trip magical. WDW is a great place for creating those moments (maybe the only place). Great rides, great show, great restaurants and a license to be a kid again.

If your family has silly traditions at the parks we’d love to hear them. Share them in the comments below.

I’m sure other family’s do weird stuff like that also. At least I hope they do.

  1. We have several traditions… First one is that I play Wishes everytime we pass under the sign on Osceola Parkway announcing our arrival to WDW. Second, I always take a photo in front of the Harmony Barber Shop which is a tribute to my Father who was a barber. Third, we Always have a funnel cake and sit in our special area when watching Wishes. And finally, we have this really corny walk my wife and I do called the “Park Walk” which is done every time we arrive on Main Street U.S.A.
