The Best/Worst Anniversary Ever at Disney World

Hello Disney Lovers!  My name is Mike Conrad and I am the new “Gadget Guy” for The Disney Dads!  Before I start with my gadgets to help you navigate around the parks and some pretty cool technology, I wanted to share one of my favorite Disney stories.

Let me start by telling you I am a bit of a romantic guy. My wife and I were coming up on our 10th anniversary so I decided to celebrate in Disney!

When we travel to Disney, we travel in groups so parents can have a night or two away from the kids and not have to worry. On this specific trip, we traveled with my in-laws and one of my wife’s sisters.

I planned our romantic night for SIX months! I started by sending a wedding picture via FedEx to the Sam’s wholesale club on Orange Blvd.  Sam’s can make a cake from any picture you send. I actually stole it from our wedding album and took a few notes as well.

I then reached out to one of the managers at Tutto Italia Ristorante in Epcot. I worked it out so the singers would come right before desert to sing, “That’s Amore” and I would go down to one knee and present my wife with an anniversary ring. Everything was set! That morning, I had my father-in-law come up with an excuse that we had to leave so I could pick up the cake and deliver it to the restaurant. Everything was going as planned!

The big night came and we left our children at the Boardwalk with my in-laws. We promptly walked over to Tutto Italia Ristorante. When we entered, I gave the manager a wink and we were seated in a wonderful table for two.

I ordered some appetizers and a bottle of wine. After a glass of wine, my wife didn’t look very well. She is not a great traveler, so this wasn’t a surprise. However, she got up and had to go out for a breath of fresh air.

I went out to see how she was doing and she was having a panic attack. She said we have to go! I told her I would have to settle the bill.  I went in and told the manager that the plans had changed. He went in and got the cake for me.

As we were walking back to the Boardwalk, my wife asked what was in the bag. I opened the bag and showed her the cake. She started to cry! We took a few more steps and she asked why the frosting was green. I replied, “that was the color of the bridesmaid’s dresses”.  She cried even more. As we arrived in France, I stopped her and told her I needed to give her something. I pulled the ring out of my pocket and gave it to her. She cried once again. I told her what I had planned and she cried all the way back to the Boardwalk.

When we arrived back to the room, her father opened the door and said, “Was that the most romantic night ever?” She went into the bedroom and cried. He looked at me and said, “What the hell did you do?”  I explained what had happened and why she was upset. She eventually got over it and we laugh about it all the time.  I made it up to her, when we took a weekend alone for our next wedding anniversary. That weekend was truly romantic but is another story for another day.
