For the first time ever, there is about to be a Disney movie to revolutionize Disney movies. In this upcoming movie the leading lady we will all cheer for will be….Maleficent?!
This will be a live action movie and the first Disney movie to star a villainous antagonist as the protagonist. In all of Disney history, there has not been a villain as terrifying as Maleficent. She has horns and green skin with glowing yellow eyes. She lives in a castle with ghouls for henchmen. Her black raven (by name of Diablo, though it is never said in the movie) is deviously intelligent and aggressive. She curses babies and tracks them down for 16 years! And she can become a dragon. What person could possibly want to cheer her on?
That is the challenge behind this movie.
This movie is set to be a prequel to the 1959 Disney movie Sleeping Beauty. Maleficent is supposed to be about her experience growing up and the series of trialing events that cause her to curse an infant and turn her into the cruel woman we saw in Sleeping Beauty.
This live action production stars some pretty well-known names. Angelina Jolie will be playing Maleficent, and really no one better could have been chosen for the part. Jolie’s four year old daughter will be the toddler Aurora, who Maleficent will be cursing at the christening. Peter Capaldi (the recently announced 12th Doctor of BBC’s hit series Doctor Who) will be playing a new but crucial character, King Kinloch who will be the catalyst to Maleficent’s evil ways. Elle Fanning (from We Bought a Zoo and Super 8) will be playing the 16 year old Aurora.
While reading People magazine, there was an article about Jolie’s experience on set and how visiting children reacted to her appearance. She mentioned that children would scream and cry when they saw her. Jolie recounted one little boy even saying “Mommy, please make the mean witch stop talking to me”. Jolie’s four year old daughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt was the only one to keep her cool.
If Maleficent’s attire weren’t stunning enough, it is known that Robert Stromberg is the director of Maleficent. He also worked on Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Oz the Great and Powerful as the production designer. Given that those were both visually spectacular, it should be safe to say that it will share some amazing qualities.
On August 10, at the annual D23 expo in Anaheim, those fortunate enough to go to the Maleficent panel got to see a special clip from the movie. It was the scene where Maleficent shows up to the christening of baby Aurora and is greeted with hostility. It is said that Jolie’s voice was eerily identical to Eleanor Audley’s (the original voice of Maleficent).
Production chief Sean Bailey added that there will be the dragon battle at the end but we might find ourselves rooting for the other side this time.
Jolie gave her thoughts on what she hope we take away from our close up with Maleficent-“I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities.”
Maleficent is due to release July 2nd 2014.
